Neuromodulators are a class of injectable cosmetic treatments that are designed to temporarily paralyze or decrease muscle movement. Also called wrinkle relaxers, these injectable solutions are formulated using a special strain of botulinum toxin type A and are effective for diminishing the appearance of laugh lines, forehead and bunny nose wrinkles and other fine lines that develop from years of facial movement. How Do Neuromodulator Injections Work?
Our dermatologists will first work with you during your consultation to get a better understanding of your aesthetic goals and devise an injectable treatment plan. Neuromodulator (Botox Cosmetic, Dyport) injections are the most common aesthetic procedure performed in men and woman.
Wrinkles are described as dynamic or satic in type. Dynamic wrinkles are those caused by contracting your muscles like the one's you get to forehead or the number 11's between the brows (glabella) and crows feet. Meanwhile, static wrinkles are those that remain when your muscles are not contracted and you are not making any expressions. Static wrinkles are those when you face is at rest and generally the result of photoaging of the skin from years of unprotected exposure to the sun or natural aging. This results in loose and crepey skin with decreased elasticity and collagen resulting in wrinkles at rest giving one the appearance of being angry and tired all the time. Botox Cosmetic or Dysport in combination with dermal fillers or proceedures like fractional resurfacing, Sofwave, or RF Microneedling will set you clock back many years.
Depending on your schedule, we may be able to perform BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport injections immediately following your facial skin assessment at our Midland-Odessa, TX office. The treatment involves injecting the chosen neurotoxin into the treatment area(s) using a very fine needle. The neuromodulator will disrupt the nerve that signal that make the muscles to move, allowing the skin to smooth out. Wrinkle relaxer injections can be performed at our office in only a few minutes and with minimal discomfort. Once we are done, you can leave and go about your day as normal.
how does it take for effect to start & how long does it last
Botox Cosmetic gradually begin in 7-10 days with full effect in 2 weeks. Dysport starts a few days earlier and lasts a few days more. In general there is very little difference to the patient. Botox Cosmetic has been out the longest and the first used in wrinkle treatments and has expanded to other specialty uses for medical conditions.
will insurance cover the cost of neuromodulator treatment
As with all cosmetic treatments neuromodulator treatments with Botox Cosmetic or Dyport is not covered by insurance. If this is used for hiperhidrosis your may cover a portion of treatment and you will be responsible for uncovered portion. You should call your insurance carrier prior to treatment to see what portion if any is covered.
what are the risks or complications
Neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic, Dysport) have a very good safety profile and have been used over 20 years. Rarely, these can inadvertently drift into nearby muscles and cause some temporary drooping of the eyelid that usually subside in 3-4 weeks. There are eye drops to help raise the lid if this were to occur. Bruising at the injection site is possible, but infrequent. A slight headache in a small number of patients that last a few hours is normal and can be helped with tylenol or motrin if needed.
