Contact UsWhat Are Shingles?
Shingles is the common name for herpes zoster, a viral condition that causes painful, itchy rashes and blisters to develop on the skin. This infection is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox, meaning individuals who dealt with chickenpox in their youth are at risk of shingles later in life. In most instances, shingles pop up on the chest or on the side of your face as a group of blisters. While it's most common for older adults to experience shingles, it may also affect teenagers and young adults. Most patients who have a case of shingles will heal quickly and never deal with the illness again, but some may experience the condition multiple times. If you were sick with chickenpox earlier in your life and are now troubled by herpes zoster, the skilled and knowledgeable practitioners at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center in Midland, TX may be able to help. Contact our office to learn more about shingles treatments and other skin care services we offer.
How Are Shingles Recognized and Treated?
Shingles develop when the varicella-zoster virus "reactivates" after lying dormant in the body following an earlier case of chickenpox. This reactivation is believed to be caused by a weakened immune system, or in some cases, a malfunction in the nervous system. Unlike other forms of the herpes virus, shingles often create symptoms on a small area of one side of the body. The most frequent symptoms are pain, tingling, numbness, itching or burning, or a red rash. These symptoms usually appear a couple of days after you first begin experiencing pain. Other symptoms include sensitivity to touch and fluid-filled blisters that could break open and scab, as well as fatigue, sensitivity to light, fever, or a headache. Some individuals might feel as though they have the flu. Individuals with shingles usually find their symptoms occur in stages with pain occurring and then observable symptoms following.
There is no way to permanently cure herpes zoster, but there are numerous antiviral medications designed to minimize the symptoms, provide relief from discomfort, and lessen the chance of future outbreaks. Shingles treatments at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center generally consist of antivirals to fight the infection and pain relief creams to reduce discomfort. Prescription-strength painkillers can also be prescribed.
A small population of shingles patients may experience postherpetic neuralgia, a complication that causes a burning sensation in the skin that was previously affected. In rare cases, this complication can be much more serious, creating lasting pain, vision loss, and pneumonia. Diagnosing and treating shingles early on can help reduce the risk of postherpetic neuralgia.
