What Is Ringworm?

Ringworm is a broad term used to refer to a variety of fungal infections that can affect the hair, skin, and nails. Ringworm is called by different names based on the part of the body that is infected. When ringworm infects the feet, it is commonly known as athlete's foot while this fungal infection in the groin area is known as jock itch. When ringworm develops on the body, it typically creates a ring-shaped rash, which is what gives the infection its name. If the fungal infection sets in, the result is a white or red mark on your skin, creating itchiness, irritation, and sometimes even hair loss if damage to the follicle is significant enough. Ringworm is very contagious and can easily be passed between people, as well as animals or items that are contaminated. The skin specialists at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center are well-practiced when it comes to diagnosing and treating ringworm in Midland, TX. If you have symptoms you think are caused by a fungal skin infection, schedule a consultation with our team at your earliest convenience.

How Is Ringworm Identified and Treated?

As a fungus, ringworm tends to grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as pools, locker rooms, or even on sweat-covered skin. The fungus is extremely contagious, spreading by touch or by sharing infected items. Ringworm is commonly identified by the presence of a circular, raised rash that appears on the skin in the affected area. Depending on the area of the body that is infected, the rash may be itchy, irritated, or give off an odor. Because there are other types of skin infections that can cause similar symptoms, a skin scrape or biopsy may be ordered to confirm a diagnosis.

Once the team at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center has diagnosed your ringworm, they will present your treatment options. For the most part, the fungal infection can be eradicated with topical ointments, powders, or sprays, clearing up within two weeks or so. Ringworm on the scalp may be addressed with prescription medications and antifungal shampoos. For more extreme cases of ringworm, such as those affecting the hair or nails, longer-term treatments may be needed to fully eliminate the infection. Our team will discuss what to expect in your treatment and how to prevent ringworm from reoccurring.
