What Is Folliculitis?

Folliculitis is the medical term for inflammation of the hair follicles. Characterized by the development of red bumps or pimples, folliculitis can be caused by ingrown hairs, clogged pores, excessive moisture, a physical irritant (such as a shaving bump or bug bite), or bacterial infection. While mild cases of folliculitis will often clear up on their own in a short time, frequent or severe infections may require treatment, like those offered at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center. If left neglected, folliculitis can worsen to the point of causing scarring or permanent loss of hair. If you frequently experience painful red bumps caused by hair follicle infection, call our Midland, TX practice to schedule a folliculitis consultation.

How Is Folliculitis Diagnosed and Treated?

Folliculitis is typically diagnosed through a simple skin exam or a swab of the infected site to identify the underlying bacteria. There are multiple classifications of folliculitis, a few of the most common being:

  • Bacterial folliculitis: The most common form of this condition, bacterial folliculitis develops when the follicles become infected by bacteria that normally live on the surface of the skin. This type usually causes rashes and uncomfortable bumps.
  • Pseudomonas folliculitis (hot tub rash): Develops within days of initial infection, which can occur in warm water (like heated pools or hot tubs) that is not properly balanced
  • Pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps): Caused by ingrown hairs, often in individuals with naturally curly hair or those who get bikini waxes
  • Pityrosporum folliculitis: Caused by a yeast infection and typically creates bumps and rashes throughout the back and chest

Whatever caused your hair follicle infection, the providers at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center will work to reduce the inflammation, unclog the pores, and eliminate the infection that is at the heart of your symptoms. Treatments for folliculitis at our office often include antiseptic or exfoliating washes to clean the pores and topical or oral antibiotics to fight the infection.
