What Is A Wart?

Warts are skin lesions that commonly develop on the hands, fingers, and toes, though they can appear anywhere on the body. Warts tend to look like little, fleshy peas, but they may vary in size. It is also common for warts to develop in groups on the knees and elbows. Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are over 100 types of HPV that can infect humans with over 40 that can infect the genital area.  Most common types are HPV-6 and HPV-11.  With prophylactic vaccination against HPV-6, HPV-11, HPV-16 and HPV-18 it is anticipated to reduce prevalence of external genital warts and cervical cancer.  Though warts are harmless for the most part, they can be annoying and unsightly. Over-the-counter wart removal products aren't normally strong enough, which is why Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center offers wart removal at our modern aesthetic office in Midland-Odessa TX. When you have a wart or other skin growth you'd like removed, schedule a consultation with the skin specialists at our practice.

How Are Warts Identified and Treated?

Warts are most commonly identified from the presence of bumps on the skin that feel rough on top and fleshy underneath. They may be spiny or have a cauliflower like appearance that appear in clusters.  Warts can be contagious with repeated contact with other areas of skin less protected and with scratching. You should avoid sexual intercourse with genital warts and use condoms at all times to avoid spread.  Depending on the type of wart and its location, you may notice different symptoms:

Plantar warts: Also called foot warts, these appear as brown or skin-colored bumps that cause pain when you take a step.

  • Filiform warts: Commonly found near the lips or eyes, these warts have tiny "fingers" of skin that project from the surface of the wart.
  • Flat warts: These are small, flesh-colored warts that can be identified by their flat surface.
  • Genital warts: These are growths that develop around the genitals. They can be soft and pebbly and can be spread through sex.

Wart treatments at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center are sometimes done with cryotherapy. With this method, our team uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart away. A blister will develop around the wart and the dead skin will fall off within a week. Another option is using cantharidin, a substance that can cause redness of the skin when applied to a wart. This chemical is placed on the skin to create a blister around the wart — it's a typical and popular remedy because the application causes little to no discomfort. Electrosurgery (burning) may also be used, as well as scraping with a curette or cutting away the wart. Chemical peels, laser treatments, immunotherapy, or bleomycin injections may also be treatment options if the wart is difficult to treat.
