Contact UsWhat Is A Mole?
Moles, also called nevi, are extremely common — in fact, most individuals have at least one mole somewhere on their body, and many have upwards of 20. These lesions develop when pigment-producing cells (called melanocytes) cluster together to darken a small patch of skin. Though moles are completely normal and very often harmless, it is important to work with a skin care professional whenever you notice changes in your complexion to ensure they are not indicative of underlying health concerns. At Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, our dermatologists offer routine mole inspections for patients in Midland, TX, assessing their size, shape, and growth to determine if they are showing signs of cancerous changes. If you have moles on your body and feel uncertain about the severity of one, or if one has become bothersome, then we urge you to reach out to our practice, especially if a mole starts to change in appearance or begins to itch or bleed.
When Should I Have A Mole Removed?
Nevi can come in a large variety of shapes and sizes. Most appear in various shades of black or brown, and they may either protrude slightly from the skin or lie flush. They often darken over time, especially when exposed to the sun or during pregnancy. When checking your body for potentially dangerous moles, it's helpful to remember the ABCDE test. A mole could be cancerous if you notice the following characteristics:
- Asymmetrical: The mole is not even on both sides
- Borders: The mole appears irregular around the edges
- Color: The mole is an unusual color (not brown or black) or has changed its color
- Diameter: The mole is larger than half a centimeter across
- Evolves: The mole grows or changes in size, height, color, or shape
If you are unsure, the safest bet is to schedule an examination with a dermatologist. If there is cause for concern, they may remove a part of the growth to have it biopsied. In most cases, mole removal is not necessary, though it is an option if the lesion is precancerous or if it is causing irritation, discomfort, or cosmetic problems. In those situations, our providers at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center can perform a surgical mole removal, numbing the skin and removing the growth with a scalpel. If the nevus is flat against the skin, another surgical procedure called shave removal may be carried out. In this procedure, the treatment area is numbed, and a small blade is used to cut around and beneath the mole.
