What Are Hives?

Urticaria, more commonly known as hives, is a skin condition that causes patches of pink or red welts to appear on the skin in various shapes and sizes. These welts may itch, swell, or become inflamed and painful. While hives can vary in size, from the size of a pinpoint to a larger part of the skin, which can stretch across a large region of the body, they typically fade within 12 hours. The dermatologists at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center in Midland, TX will help diagnose, cure, and prevent urticaria outbreaks for the 15% of the women and men who will experience hives at least once in their life. Once an individual has hives, they can follow certain protocols to keep it at bay and/or treat it quickly should there be a flare-up.

What Causes Urticaria, and How Is It Treated?

Urticaria can be caused by any number of factors. A single outbreak of hives is typically due to a virus or disease. These episodes normally dissipate between a few days to a few weeks. In certain other situations, a person may experience a hives outbreak due to an allergic reaction from things, such as medications, bug bites/stings, nuts, and certain clothes, among other triggers. Chronic hives may be brought on by problems in the immune system that cause the body to become over-sensitized. The practitioners at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center will perform a comprehensive skin examination to understand what is causing the outbreak of hives before devising a treatment plan to prevent additional outbreaks.

Acute urticaria is generally treated with antihistamines to suppress the allergic response, as well as other medicines to reduce swelling and discomfort. Chronic urticaria can be harder to treat, but some of the same medicines can be used to help manage or prevent breakouts. CIU, or chronic idiopathic urticaria, is a kind of hives that lasts for months and sometimes years. This more severe form of the condition is treated with both antihistamines and omalizumab (an injectable humanized antibody), which can help reduce your sensitivity to irritants and allergens.

Thank you, Basin Dermatology! They got me in quik because I had gotten hives and was very itchy all over my body the night before and was able to get in the same day I called. They prescribed me medication and creme to stop with the pain and helped with other remedies that seem to work. The Docter was very nice and considerate of my needs and listened to my concerns. Highly recommend everyone to go here!
